SRI LANKA - You can assist with the construction of homes and sustainable development facilities in the Tangalle region in the south of Sri Lanka. After the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, locals have been struggling to rebuild their lives and our volunteers have been there to help. Volunteers have helped build 29 homes in the village of Ketakalawatta, along with a prayer centre, shops, and a playground. Efforts now focus on the building of a Trade Training facility in the Tangalle region to help ensure the locals develop the technical skills they need to secure their economic future.
SWAZILAND - Swaziland has the ill repute of having the highest per capita rate H.I.V. infection rate. The AIDS pandemic has ravaged the country creating a generation of child-led families and orphans. Volunteers work with the community outreach program to build homes and community care points that provide education and a daily meal for orphaned children. This experience offers incredible satisfaction by substantially improving the quality of life for families that have been devastated by HIV/AIDS.
PERU - In the beautiful farming valley of the Mantaro River lays the city of Huancayo. Working with the host partner, ARGUEDIANOS, volunteers assist in the construction of a school that will teach trades and improved agricultural methods to children who are generally under educated. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of building the facility including hands-on work such as mixing cement, installing windows and doors, and painting.
GUATEMALA - Volunteers work in the Village of San Miguel Dueñas on the outskirts of Antigua. Our host-partner, the Open Windows Foundation, works to provide disadvantaged children with the basic opportunity to learn how to read. and free education. Volunteers will help children with computer skills, numbers and crafts. Volunteers will also assist in the construction of needed infrastructure projects such as “youth-safe houses”.
INDIA - Located in the Thar Desert, Rajasthan is one of India's poorest states where the lack of water is a pervasive problem. Poor land management has compounded the severity of this problem which threatens the the livelihood of families whose survivals depends on their use of land. Volunteers work directly with subsistence farmers in the construction of small sub-service dams, water barriers, wells and land partitions.
CAMBODIA - Cambodia is one the most impoverished countries in the world still recovering after 30 years of violence and repression. Volunteers support a community-led participatory development project in the village of Chamkar Bei, which is one of the last holdouts of the Khmer Rouge. Volunteers work on locally driven projects that involve food security, resource conservation, literacy and vocational training in integrated farming and renewable energy technology. Activities include building a ‘Dream Home’ for a family, harvesting rice, to painting the local community buildings and leading workshops at an elementary school. Volunteers’ efforts will help to rebuild communities and develop the foundation for a civil society.
KENYA - Developing World Connections volunteers in Kenya work with the Maasai people in and around the town of Maai Mahiu. The town rests south of Nairobi in the beautiful Rift Valley Province. In collaboration with our host-partner, Comfort the Children participants contribute to educational opportunities as a sustainable way to reduce poverty. Building schools, libraries and community facilities, volunteers play a significant developmental role.
RWANDA - Developing World Connections volunteers who choose Rwanda will make an important gesture of international solidarity. By visiting the people and witnessing the legacy of genocide, volunteers honour the country’s effort to rebuild for a sustainable and peaceful future. Participants work to build community infrastructure.
HAITI - Volunteers who choose Haiti will work around the area of Mirebalais in collaboration with FATEM. Participants will work to build a technology training and placement centre, increasing the econmic and educational opportunities and strengthening the people's capacity to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.
