DWC’s Machu Picchu Challenge

Education is the key to a better life

Peru’s education system is free for children in elementary and secondary school, but it has been so chronically underfunded that it is ranked dead last in international student assessment ratings. That underfunding is most evident in the rural areas, where schools are ill equipped and overcrowded.

It’s estimated that two million children and adolescents in this South American country are working. They either drop out of school entirely or they fall far behind in their classes. Sixty per cent of those 17 and younger live in poverty.

Developing World Connections has been working for several years to improve schooling for Peru’s children. The Machu Picchu Challenge will boost those efforts and give more children a chance for a brighter future.

Take the challenge
DWC has created the Machu Picchu Challenge to raise money to make education more accessible to kids in Peru who need it most. In April of 2018, participants will visit the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Machu Picchu is a significant remnant of 15th century Incan civilization located in a stunningly beautiful setting between the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon basin.

Machu Picchu’s structures were built with a precision-fit dry stone technique that, for the most part, are still solid and tight today. The once-hidden community includes houses, temples, water fountains, a guardhouse and jail, waterways and irrigation systems. In addition to touring this icon of Peruvian culture, participants will spend three days working on a school outside of the capital city of Lima. This will give them a chance to meet some of the children they are helping by taking the challenge.

Choose your way
Participants can take the challenge by trail or by train. Those who go by trail will hike the Inca trail for four days to reach Machu Picchu. Those who go by train will spend more time in the cultural centre of Cusco before travelling to Machu Picchu by train and bus. Both groups get a chance to work on a school in Peru and meet the children who are benefiting from their donations. This is a unique opportunity to help children have a better future while getting a chance to view a world heritage site. The Peruvian government limits the number of people admitted to Machu Picchu, so it’s best to sign up before DWC’s spaces are filled.

Book it
The Machu Picchu Challenge takes place April 15 to 27, 2018. It’ll arrive sooner than you realize.
The cost is $6,950, with $5,400 of that to be credited as a charitable tax donation. The number of permits for access to Machu Picchu are tightly controlled and must be booked before the end of 2017 to ensure admission. Sign up early so you don’t miss out.
