TRIP #PHP0318:

Find a tropical paradise of aqua-coloured Pacific Ocean water, coral atolls, warm beaches and unique geography.

Mar 10, 2018
Mar 24, 2018
Approx. $2,300
Cebu City, Philippines

You’ll work with Rise Above Foundation in Cebu City on Cebu Island, Philippines. This major shipping port is the country’s oldest city and first Spanish settlement. Danish expats Flemming and Elisabet Hansen established Rise Above in Cebu City in 2000 and they’ve been running life-changing programs for education, food, dental health, medical and housing ever since.

About The Trip:

Our teams in Cebu have built homes for families and made improvements to schools (and played with the kids while they were at it) while working with our in-country partner, Rise Above Foundation. They have made an impact in the lives of people struggling just to put food on the table and children who need an education to lead better lives.

You’ll do construction that builds a future for people who have little. You’ll work alongside like-minded volunteers who are also passionate about travel and giving others a hand up, not a hand out.

You’ll leave behind a legacy like the new home one of our teams built for Peregrina, a single mother with seven children. You can see her story on our video page here.

It’s Not All Work:

March in the Philippines is at the end of dry season, so expect it to be hot and sunny. Daytime highs usually hit around 32C and evening lows drop down to 24C. That said, this is the tropics, so it’s good to be prepared for some rainfall.

Cebu City offers such sights as the historic church Basilica del Santo Nino, the Taoist Temple with landmark dragons, the Tops Lookout, Fort San Pedro, Magellan’s Cross and the Cebu Heritage Monument.

Take a side trip to Bohol Island for the beaches, diving, resorts, Chocolate Hills and the indigenous, big-eyed Philippine tarsier.

The Project:

Volunteers will be building houses with Rise Above Foundation Cebu for a family in need. The project is of great benefit to a part of the population at great risk and struggling just to put food on the table. Opportunities to connect with the local people are numerous and rewarding. You’ll participate in building a future for people who have little. You’ll work alongside like-minded volunteers who are also passionate about travel and giving others a hand up, not a hand out.

Do I need construction experience and how much will we work?
You don’t need any special skills or training. We hire local skilled labourers who will give training onsite for construction and team leaders. You will work at your own pace five days a week from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Your evenings and weekends are free for cultural activities and relaxing.
What are meals and accommodations like?
The team will stay at a hotel in Cebu City that is comfortable and clean. The food is prepared hygienically and dishes range from local to standard Western fare.
How much does it cost?
The program cost is about $2,300 and will be finalized closer to the departure date. This includes accommodations, meals, in-country transport, program costs and a donation to Rise Above Foundation Cebu. It does not include airfare.

The entire program and flight costs are 100% tax deductible when paid through DWC. You can also fundraise and we will issue charitable receipts for donations $20 CDN or greater.

Why should I volunteer?
Volunteer trips take you to places you otherwise might never go, to do things you otherwise might never do and to meet people you might never otherwise meet.

You’ll make a difference in others’ lives and they will make a difference in yours. Simply put, there is joy and self-discovery that comes with giving to others. And you’ll have fun doing it, too.
