Day 1 – Monday
This evening we went to Open Door to distribute Days for Girls kits. We expected about 20 girls but 45 showed up including two nursing mothers! It was a great experience to watch the teachers—who had both taken the Days for Girls Ambassador of Women’s Health Course, deliver a lively, accurate and interactive presentation. Thank you everyone for your participation. We changed at least 50 lives last night—some girls asked to take kits home to their mothers.

So much accomplished already in the first 3 days of DWC Guatemala! On our first day, the group gathered for a walking tour of Antigua. We got to know each other and got familiar with the city. The city is within walking distance of our beautiful villa which has stunning views of volcanoes in the background. We’ve installed 34 eco stoves for very grateful families so far and are aiming to reach our goal of 100 stoves.
Our team leaders and other volunteers involved with Days for Girls arranged an education day and menstrual kit distribution for local girls. Forty five kits were given out to female youths so far with another distribution day planned. We had a tour of DWC’s partner school and even freshened up the paint on some walls.
We have 3 more days in Guatemala to install many more eco stoves and hopefully have time for more cultural activities. We’re hoping the beautiful weather holds up as well!!
Final Day Post
As we all head back to our ‘normal’ lives at home, I think I speak for all of us when I say, none of us is quite the same person we were one short week ago. The recognition of how privileged we are, and having felt the raw gratitude of people who have so much less has left it’s mark on our hearts. For me some of the most memorable moments were on the trip home each afternoon after a hard day of putting in stoves and hearing the joy and exhilaration in the voices of everyone as they compared notes, laughed, and planned for the next day.
So, when does the next DWC trip leave??
