Refurbishing a Remote School

Education is the cornerstone of a thriving, empowered community. Yet, in many rural areas, a lack of basic infrastructure in schools—especially clean water and sanitation—greatly hinders learning and overall well-being. In Gogunda Tehsil, Udaipur district, Rajasthan, DWC recognizes this urgent need and propose utilizing available funds to build vital infrastructure, including freshwater supply systems, classrooms, and toilet facilities in government schools. Located about 35 kilometers from Udaipur city, Gogunda Tehsil has a population of approximately 214,948, with a troubling literacy rate of just 51.14%, and a significant gender gap (54.38% male vs. 28.83% female literacy). The region, which is largely dependent on agriculture and daily-wage labor, also faces a high number of tribal communities reliant on forest produce for survival.

In many schools across Gogunda, the absence of safe drinking water and proper sanitation directly impacts student attendance, retention, and academic performance. Young girls, in particular, are more likely to drop out due to the lack of hygienic toilet facilities, while children frequently fall ill from unsafe drinking water, further compromising their education and development. This project aims to improve the educational experience for children ensuring they have access to safe water, clean sanitation, and a healthier environment to foster their learning potential. Your support can help break down these barriers, providing these children with the foundation they need to succeed.

MAKE AN IMPACT
In India
  • Low Enrollment and High Dropout Rates: While primary education enrollment in rural Rajasthan is relatively high at about 95%, the transition to secondary education is challenging, with the dropout rate at the secondary level reaching around 40%. Early marriage and financial constraints are key factors contributing to this high dropout rate, especially for girls.

  • Teacher Shortages and Infrastructure Deficiencies: Approximately 20% of government schools in rural Rajasthan face teacher shortages, and about 30% of schools lack proper facilities such as toilets or clean drinking water. This hampers the quality of education and deters student attendance.

Travel Light Offset Your Carbon Footprint

Carbon offsets are used to compensate for the greenhouse gasses that we create through certain activities, such as flying. For every tonne of carbon released into the atmosphere, an ‘offset’ is a carefully designed project that absorbs or stores the equivalent CO2 emissions. You can choose to offset your own flight, your whole family’s, or do this as a gift for a friend.
