The Journey Begins: Volunteering in Lima

Posted in Machu Picchu Challenge on April 20, 2018

Meeting Our Beneficiaries: Our volunteer team, under the leadership of Doug Wittal arrived safely in Peru on Sunday afternoon after an overnight flight from Vancouver to Mexico City and Mexico City to Lima. This is a much bigger city than I imagined; the van driver told us the population was 11 million. I had no real expectations about Lima but assumed as it was on the ocean, it would be humid and lush. I was wrong on both counts. It is a very dry place; Lima gets very little rain so it is actually very dry and much of the city is very brown.

Embracing Challenges and Trepidation Picture this: 7 volunteers, 4 missed connections, and 3 lost pieces of luggage; hardly the image of a cohesive group to help one Sri Lankan family who nearly lost everything to a flood.
